|An insider's guide to little-known places to go and things to see in Dubrovnik|
BANJE, THE CELEBRITY OF DUBROVNIK BEACHES
This is the main, most famous central beach just next to the Old Town. It has a representative view at the old port and the city walls, island of Lokrum, boats coming from all around the world... The view that has become one of the symbols of Dubrovnik.
The beach is sandy and covered with pebbles. It has two entrances, one which is closer to the Old Town and another next to Excelsior hotel.
For those who like ball games there is a volleyball playground and you will surely notice a group of people playing "Picigin" in the shallow water. This is the game played with a small ball that players throw at each other and have to kick back without dropping it.
Children who come here enjoy the slide, so it is definitely a beach for the whole family. There are activities for every member: renting a scooter and a water-banana, deckchairs, parasols with a glimpse of turkish style... The beach is also equipped with toilets and showers.
People keep coming back to this beach because it's very vivid, full of people and nice music from the nearby cafe. The music keeps playing until late night so when discovering the secrets of night life in Dubrovnik, you will surely come across this place.
On Your Way to the Beach and Back
There is a small hand-made souvenir shop on the way to the beach worth paying a visit. These souvenirs are special and you won't find them anywhere in Dubrovnik except here. They are made of palm tree in many different shapes of sea creatures, from fish to turtle. To make one shape it takes a lot of time, concentration and love for that kind of art.
I'll just mention one more thing to pay attention to. If you're coming back from the beach when the sun is setting, take some time to sit on the benches above the beach. The view is spectacular...
